WAROONA brothers Fedele and Nikolas Franco joined 30 riders on Monday as they set off on a 600-kilometre cycle to raise money for Children’s Leukaemia and the Australian Cancer Research Foundation.
The 12- and 13-year-olds are the youngest riders taking part in the South West Bike Trek that started in Mandurah and ends in Augusta on Sunday.
It is the second year the boys have taken part in the ride after they convinced their father Brad, an organiser and rider in the trek, that they were ready.
Fedele and Nikolas wanted to take part in the event to help those less fortunate than themselves.
They said they wanted to help out children who were affected by cancer after hearing and seeing stories in real life and on television.
The boys mum Sandra said she was proud of her children for taking part in the ride.
“They were pumped to be doing it again,” she said.
“It’s a good family bonding event.”
Sandra and her daughter Caprice ride in a support vehicle behind the cycling group.
Fedele and Nikolas trained for the trek by riding with their dad to and from work.
“They ride out to Alcoa with their dad and I come in and pick them up and drop them off,” she said.
The riders stopped off at the Pinjarra Bakery, one the major sponsors on Monday, before travelling to Waroona on Tuesday where they were joined by students from the local school on a 7km ride around town.
The group hope to top the $70,000 they raised last year during this year’s trek.
