LONG-time Mandurah resident and former councillor John Hughes has died.
The tireless community champion and charity worker died suddenly on Monday.
Mr Hughes served 11 years as a City of Mandurah councillor and came within five per cent of winning the Federal seat of Canning in the 2007 election.
He ran for the seat of Mandurah as an independent in last year’s State election and also ran for Mayor.
He chaired the waste alliance with Cleanaway and the Government-appointed Peel Regional Park, Peel Inlet Management committees and sat on the Rivers Regional Council and a number of local, not for profit groups.
Most recently he devoted his time to working with the Carolia Charity which provides for needy children in Bali.
The Mandurah Mail extends deepest sympathies to Mr Hughes' family, friends and loved ones.
