MANDURAH entertainer Ron McArthur, more commonly known as Rockin Ronnie is hitting the road this October in a different way.
Instead of going on a music tour, the local resident has decided to ride 1000 kilometres for the Great Cycle Challenge to raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute after he recently found out three Australian children die from cancer every week.
“It’s all about the kids,” Ronnie said.
“These are kids that haven’t had a life yet.
“Everyone has to die sometime, but these kids haven’t even lived yet.”
The Great Cycle Challenge asks people across the country to ride a self-nominated distance during October to raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
As a three-time state veterans cycling champion and a hill climb event-participant in the World Masters Games, Ronnie said he felt 1000km was “doable” for his level of experience.
He said it didn’t matter how far someone rode or how much they raised as every dollar going towards “much needed research”.
“In other charity rides, people need to raise a certain amount before entering,” Ronnie said.
“It’s just all about the kids and how much we can raise for them [collectively].”
Originally Ronnie had a “ridiculously low” goal of $100 but after donations from friends and family, he has reached more than $900.
“Now I have no real target,” he said.
“Whatever I end up with will be great but obviously the more the better it is for the kids.”
