A third oval in the Sir Ross McLarty sporting precinct is under construction thanks to the financial support from Alcoa’s Pinjarra refinery.
Alcoa contributed almost $100,000 to the project which is also supported by Department of Education, the Shire of Murray and Department of Sport and Recreation.
The oval is being constructed adjacent to the existing oval, opposite the Pinjarra Primary School on Dixon Avenue.
Local school groups, sporting clubs and the wider community will all be able to access the oval and use it for numerous activities and sporting events all year round.
Alcoa Pinjarra refinery manager Simon Pascoe said every year Alcoa partnered with the Council on numerous projects to help improve services and facilities in the Shire of Murray.
“Pinjarra is a sporting community that really make the most of the recreational facilities in town,” he said.
“I am confident that this oval will be well used by the school, cricket, football and many more clubs in the area.
“Alcoa is excited about working with the Shire to help build a stronger community for the future.
“We still have another couple of Shire projects we are funding this year and already starting to scope projects to fund for next year.”
Shire president Wally Barrett said the development of a third oval at Sir Ross McLarty sporting precinct had arisen out of Murray’s growth in local sport and subsequent need for additional facilities.
“The success of Murray’s growth for the betterment of the community is significantly aided by contributions from organisations that recognise the need to provide facilities or services that promote a healthy, vibrant and diverse community,” he said.
“The Shire of Murray recognises and appreciates Alcoa as such an organisation and looks forward to partnering with Alcoa for many other projects in the future.”
Reticulation has just been installed on the oval and surfacing and landscaping will be completed by the end of November.
Although construction will be complete by the end of the year, it will not be open for public use until October 2015, giving the turf time to settle.
