THE memory of Coolup resident Vicki Hordacre has helped bring more than $17,000 worth of goods to Peel Palliative Care (PPC), more than $8700 to the Cancer Council of Western Australia and the Rotary Club of Pinjarra.
Her husband Richard wanted to do something special to honour her memory and with the support of the Pinjarra Rotary Club, he donated her beloved red Harley Davidson to raise funds for the groups she cared about.
The only snag in the plan was the club couldn’t raffle a second-hand item but the motorcycle was traded in for a new Harley.
“I think this is the sort of thing she would have wanted to do; she was a very giving person,” Mr Hordacre said.
“She was a qualified nurse and had worked at PPC and she was a rotarian so we divided the funds between the groups she was passionate about.
“All of those groups put in a lot for her so it was great to be able to give them something back.
Pinjarra rotarian Murray Chapman also helped organise the raffle goods were donated to PPC instead of cash so they would definitely stay in the region.
Mr Hordacre said his wife also took part in The Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer, which involved cycling from to Pinjarra to Perth and back before she passed.
“When she worked as a nurse she had said at that least having cancer gave you a chance to resolve things and say goodbye,” he said.
“When she was diagnosed they gave her four years – she had surgery and chemotherapy but after that she got a bit of a reprieve.
“We got the chance to travel to Canada to see her sister and we visited her brother in Melbourne.”
