WHAT KATY DID the column from Mandurah Mail deputy editor Kate Hedley.
Kate divides her time between filing crime reports in Mandurah and sunning herself on George Clooney's yacht in Monte Carlo.
She will almost certainly never be Mother of the Year, but is in with a chance for the Miss Universe title once she decides which planet to represent.

ONE of the things I like most about Facebook is reading updates about my friends’ kids.
They are winning medals and merit awards, kicking goals and scoring scholarships to prestigious universities.
These are the kind of children any parent would be proud to have.
Meanwhile, mine asked the other night if Hello Kitty was a cat.
Then she asked me if Barack Obama was black.
And whether hipsters were actually hamsters.
It’s true.
These are the things which occupy her mind.
And while she is no dummy, I have to laugh when she tells me to make renovations to get her ears pierced or to help her draw a family tree including all her relevants.
She rocks out to Miley Cyprus on a pretty frequent basis and tells me things are oddvious.
And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Of course there are times when I wish for a little bit more normal in my life.
But listening to her rap the answers to her spelling homework?
I wouldn’t give that up for anything.
A sense of fun is something I’ve tried to foster in her since she was born.
And now I’ve been told about the perfect way to ensure our funny memories stay treasured forever.
Talking to a colleague recently, she told me she had set up email accounts for her children and from time to time sends them photos or letters reminding them of a special event or a funny thing they said.
It’s such a great idea.
My colleague has the passwords to the accounts, and when her children are older she will let them access the story of their lives.
I love the concept.
Although I’m not sure how my daughter will feel about having been the subject of columns like this.
Hopefully she will be thrilled.
Because something else I’ve tried to teach her as she grows is the ability to laugh at herself.
And that is the best thing she has taught me.
With her by my side the world is bright and full of promise.
She has taught me way more than I could ever teach her.
Like how to see beyond race, in Obama’s case, and even beyond species when it comes to Hello Kitty and hipsters.
