THE Meadow Springs Primary School soccer team defeated Christian Brothers College to be crowned the best team in Western Australia.
The year six and seven students progressed to the state finals after winning the regional qualifier on August 8.
Meadow Springs went through their pool undefeated to set up a match up with the other pool winner, Mandurah Baptist College in the regional qualifier grand final.
The side was down 2-0 at half time but rallied in the second half to run out 3-2 winners.
The result meant both sides qualified for the state finals as well as six other regional winners and runner-ups across the state.
In their first game of the state finals Meadow Springs came up against Christian Brothers College’s B side.
The game finished in a one all draw with Meadow Springs able to win the penalty shoot-out 3-2.
In their next game, the semi-final Meadow Springs were too strong for Peter Moyes Anglican Community School winning 3-2. In the state grand final Meadow Springs came up against last year’s champions Christian Brothers College’s A side last week who had gone through the competition undefeated.
The game finished in a nil all draw with the sides also unable to score in extra time.
In a penalty shootout the sides were again locked after five shots with the penalties continuing until one team broke the deadlock.
After going through nine players it was Meadow Springs who prevailed 7-6 to win the state title and Glory Cup.
The teams’ coach Roger Lewis was proud of his team’s effort.
“It would have been a shame to have been beaten on penalties,” he said.
“It was a huge effort, they showed great perseverance.”
Twins Liam and Ryan Ellison were selected in the WA state team to travel to Bendigo in September following the championships.
Liam was also awarded the fair play award as the best player of the competition.
