A MANDURAH coffee shop owner who was looking for a way to give back to the community has started offering suspended coffees to those in need.
Steve McManus runs Dew’s Berry Café in Smart Street Mall, and while the initiative of suspended coffee is not new around the world, it is for the local man who has embraced the idea.
“It’s new to me,” Mr McManus said.
“But I want to do it.”
The way suspended coffees work is a classic example of paying it forward.
A customer buys their own caffeine fix, then pays for two cups, asking for one to be suspended.
Then, when a homeless person stops by and asks if there are any suspended coffees available, they are given a cup already paid for by a previous customer.
“It’s the community who make this work,” Ms McManus said.
“And I find Mandurah quite community-driven.
“A lot of people are doing their part.
“This is something I can help with.”
While Mr McManus is still ironing out the finer details of how the program will operate, customers can already suspend coffee orders for those less fortunate from today.
