The owner of a high-performance car club with more than 3,000 members said his club would not tolerate any members behaving like hoons, but believes police shouldn't be focusing on clubs.
On Tuesday, WA Police revealed results of two operations at the weekend that specifically targeted car clubs in the Perth Hills and southern suburbs.
Over the two operations, 115 speeding offences were detected by radar and an additional 11 by non-radar were booked, while three people were caught drink driving.
However the owner and director of Antilag Motorsports Group, Paul Brockbank, believes car clubs are not the problem and does not tolerate members bending the rules.
He said his club, which has been running for 10 years and has more than 3,000 members primarily based in Perth, had already been targeted by police in an effort he considered a “monumental waste of time”.
“Our last meet included a short drive to a pre-determined location,” he said.
“On this route, police had set up about five speed cameras.
“I spoke to many people at the next meet and nobody I could find had been flashed as they were all abiding the speed limit.
“The strike rate was probably lower than if they put those same cameras on Leach Highway at 4pm on a Tuesday.
“To be honest, it seemed like a monumental waste of police resources considering the other issues in our community which could have had these man-hours dedicated to them.
“I would prefer the officers of the traffic enforcement group to be focused on reducing drink driving, fatigue and inattention, which are three times more likely to cause a fatal accident on our roads than speed."
Mr Brockband said his club, which also holds races at racetracks and the Wyalkatchem airstrip, had an amicable relationship with the police, adding that they tried to promote legal racing as an alternative to hoon behaviour.
“Some people with high-performance cars don’t realise that they can come to a track and drive fast legally in whatever car they have.
“This is what we aim to promote, but to do that you need public exposure, which is why we hold open meets.
“We do not tolerate any form of dangerous driving at our public meets, whether it be speeding, inattention, fatigue or drink driving.”
A spokesman for the Perth Honda Club said they would prefer not to comment, but also said that all events they had planned over the last three years had been well-behaved.
