A 31-year-old man who escaped from Acacia Prison on Monday morning has been captured by police in Jane Brook after briefly taking the number of prisoners on the run from WA Police to six.
Brett Shannon Klimczak escaped from the Serco-managed prison in the early hours of Monday morning while still wearing his prison greens, police spokeswoman Roz Weatherall said.
He was recaptured in Jane Brook after the Landcruiser he was driving became bogged on Toodyay Road and Wilson Road and is now in Royal Perth Hospital, recieving treatment for injuries police believe he sustained escaping from Acacia.
The Landcruiser was allegedly stolen from a home on the Great Southern Highway in Woottating on Monday morning.
Klimczak escaped from Wooroloo Prison Camp in December 2011 by hot-wiring a police car and went on a three-week crime spree before being captured in the East Kimberley on New Year's Day.
He was charged and convicted of 36 offences committed during those three weeks, receiving extra time in jail and having his driver's licence suspended for life.
For the brief time he was on the run, Klimczack took the tally of WA prison escapees currently on the run from police to six.
Michael James Hayward escaped from prison officers in Armadale last week when being transported between a hospital and prison and has not yet been captured, while Brett Faulkner - also known as Bernd Neumann - has been on the run since he walked away from Wooroloo Prison Farm while walking a puppy on February 8.
Dejan Graklic escaped from Karnet Prison Farm in 2003 and has not been seen since, while Kenny Ralph Ritson has been on the run since March 1983.
Warren Brian Savage tops the list, having escaped from Wooroloo Prison Farm 35 years ago.
Serco justice and corrections managing director Paul Mahoney said Acacia Prison remained in lockdown after the first escape from the prison since the company took over management of the facility 10 years ago.
"Our priority is the safety of the community and we provided WA Police with assistance as they sought to recapture the individual," he said.
"The prison remains in lockdown and is secure.
"We are conducting a thorough investigation, working with WA Police and the Department of Corrective Services and no further information will be released until the investigation is complete and a report has been provided to the Commissioner of Corrective Services."
