LOVE, loss, betrayal, loyalty, action and stunning graphics – Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has it all.
Starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Toby Kebbell and Keri Russell, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the latest offering in the Planet of the Apes saga and is quite possibly my favourite to date.
It tells the story of a community of genetically evolved apes which is threatened by a group of humans whom they didn’t believe existed anymore after a devastating virus struck 10 years earlier.
The apes realise there are many humans who survived the virus and for a short time, there is an understanding between the humans and the apes to live separately and in peace.
The growing nation of apes is led by Caesar, who is played by Andy Serkis.
He is a character you can not help but fall in love with even more in this film.
In the last film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar led the apes to freedom and in this movie, he is faced with the hurdle of retaining his leadership and an ongoing battle with Koba, played by Toby Kebbell, who cannot accept living in peace with the humans. A war begins between the humans and apes – something Caesar wanted to avoid and throughout his struggles, you can’t help but feel for him.
Themes of love, loss, betrayal and loyalty run strong in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and director Matt Reeves portrays each beautifully. It is packed with action, surprises and suspense.
The ending of the film left me wanting more, but in a good way. It wouldn’t surprise me if we were to be treated to yet another entry into the Planet of the Apes saga and if that happens, I’ll be there watching.
Give me the apes over vampires and wizards any day.
