WHILE most girls her age spend their free time shopping or going to the movies, Meggan Miller is happier helping others.
The 16-year-old Mandurah State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer has been nominated for a Young Achievement Award for her dedication to the organisation.
“I like volunteering,” she said.
“It’s become part of my life.
“It’s fun.”
Joining the local SES in 2010, Meggan devotes every Saturday to learning rescue skills, first aid, rope work and theory.
She is a member of the communications team and won Cadet of the Year in 2013.
And while she’s yet to have her skills tested in a real-life rescue situation, Meggan said she was ready if the need arose.
“It’s never good to hear of disasters,” she said.
“But to be able to help is good.
It's nice to help people.

The 2014 SES Awards winners will be announced on Saturday, October 4 at the Western Australian Fire and Emergency Services Conference.
Meggan is looking forward to the event and said even if she didn’t win she was happy to be involved in a “great group”.
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson congratulated all finalists and acknowledged the outstanding efforts of SES volunteers.
“This year’s finalists have been selected for going above and beyond the call of duty,” he said.
“The high number of nominees reflects the outstanding calibre of volunteers across the SES with this again being a tough year to select finalists.”
