The City of Mandurah will be on display in the Perth CBD as part of one of the state’s largest community arts projects.
The City submitted its entry for the 2014 Banners in the Terrace competition run by the Western Australian Local Government Association and supported by the City of Perth.
The annual exhibition of banners along St Georges and Adelaide terraces in Perth allows communities and regions throughout WA to represent themselves for thousands of people travelling along these routes each day.
This year’s entry was designed by local emerging artist Belinda Joynes who worked predominately with acrylic paint her work to explore themes relating to identity, connection and relationship to place.
Ms Joyne’s inspiration behind the banner was to design and capture the contemporary elements of Mandurah reflecting the close association and connectivity of the water, the bridges and the foreshore activities, all of which bring colour and diversity to Mandurah today.
Mayor Marina Vergone said this is an opportunity to present Mandurah’s history using bold colours and patterns that will inspire visitors who see the banner to visit Mandurah and find out more about the area.
“The City of Mandurah recognises the importance of arts and culture to our long-term sustainability, through the implementation of the Arts, Heritage and Culture Strategy,” she said.
“The plan contains a number of strategies that define the City’s role in developing arts and culture over the next 10 years, including encouraging creative communities by developing and nurturing talent, innovation and creativity whilst preserving the City’s culture by reflecting Mandurah’s authentic historic and cultural assets.”
The banners will be on display from July 27 to August 9 and the winners will be announced at the Local Government Convention on Friday, August 7.
