WHO steals from sick children?
That’s the question being asked by Make-A-Wish volunteers after thieves broke into their charity shop on the weekend.
The Wishing You Well store on the corner of Kulin Way and Reserve Drive in Mandurah was the target of burglars who caused damage to the shop and made off with thousands of dollars worth of jewellery and other items.
The break-in happened on Saturday evening with police attending the store Sunday morning as part of their investigation.
“We’re not going to let it get us down,” Make-A-Wish Mandurah/Rockingham branch president Christine Hodge said.
“We just bounce back.”
Ms Hodge said the thieves took two safes from the shop after breaking in through a back door.
The offenders also took a security recording device, making it difficult for police to catch them.
“They used our trolley to haul the big safe out,” Ms Hodge said.
“They even stole cartons of drink we had been saving for our charity golf day.”
It was all hands on deck at the shop on Monday with volunteers sorting through items and making repairs.
The team is counting its losses, but refuses to dwell on bad news.
Ms Hodge said it was business as usual for the store which raises funds for wishes made by children suffering serious illnesses.
“We’re here to raise money for sick children,” Ms Hodge said.
“We have nine kids waiting for wishes.
“They’ll get them.
“No child will miss out.”
