THERE were beautiful sights and smells to behold at the Mandurah and Districts Orchid Club of Western Australia’s Winter Show this weekend.
About 150 orchids were on show at the West Murray Community Hall and vice president Doug Meadows said it had attracted hundreds of visitors throughout the weekend.
“Contrary to what most people believe, orchids can be some of the easiest plants to grow and look after,” he said.
“While some varieties need a hothouse or a very controlled environment to grow in, there are others that just need a spot under a shade cloth and fertiliser.
“They can be killed by kindness, though – at this time of year most orchids only need to be watered every four or five days.”
Club president Bob Aurisch said international growers were surprised at the types of orchids that could flourish in Western Australia.
“In warmer environments overseas orchids can grow easily but here we have to be more careful in controlling their temperature – but it can be done,” he said.
The club host three shows per year, in summer, winter and autumn and the next show will be in September at the Billy Dower Youth Centre.
