SINCE opening seven months ago the Reach Out Drop In Centre has catered for more than 920 local people in need.
The non-profit organisation is run by volunteers who offer people in need meals, clothing and blankets as well as social contact for support.
Originally operating one day a week, the centre at the Sutton Street Hall now runs three days a week including Saturday, catering to people from all walks of life.
Reach Out Drop In volunteer Vikki Wise said the centre was started after realising there was a lack of support for people in need in the evenings and on the weekend.
Mrs Wise said there were organisations offering support to people in need during the day but not after work hours, despite having a demand for such services.
“The number of people has been growing since we first opened,” she said.
“There’s always new people.
“It’s not just about offering people a meal but also the social interaction.
“It’s a place where people can come and not be judged for circumstances and we always try to greet clients by their first name.”
Mrs Wise said community support was “amazing” with food and apparel donated from Farmer Jacks, Mandurah Bakery and local churches.
She said there were a range of different people in different circumstances who needed the service.
Volunteer Tony Johnston said the centre was appealing to the community for baby products including baby wipes, clothing, toys and prams for two of its pregnant clients who are in need of support.
Mandurah’s Reach Out Drop In Centre runs Monday and Tuesday 4-6pm and Saturday 11am-2pm.
