LOCAL business Star Surf + Skate won the Western Australian Retailer of the Year award at the 2014 Australian Surf Industry Awards.
More than 200 surf retailers, brand executives and former surfing champions were in attendance at the Twin Towns Convention Centre on the Gold Coast last week to witness Star Surf + Skate win their division.
The Surf Industry Awards pit retailers against retailers and brands against brands for 33 awards across a number of categories.
Star Surf + Skate’s director Ian “Wooly” Macpherson was ecstatic with the win.
“Being a retailer it’s the highest award we could win,” he said.
He said everyone at Star Surf + Skate was rapt to be named WA’s best surf retailer after winning in 2012 and finishing runner up in 2013.
“To win the award the national sales managers from Billabong, Quicksilver, Hurley, Ripcurl and others have a vote which equates to 80 per cent of the results, the other 20 per cent comes from a public vote,” he said.
“It’s nice to know they think we’re doing a good job.”
Macpherson said their business has taken a different approach to other surf stores.
“We have designated brand areas in our shop rather than a boardshorts wall for example,” he said.
A long-term Mandurah resident, Macpherson thanked the Mandurah community for their support.
“I’m sure a lot of our votes came from Mandurah,” he said.
“We have a large local VIP database here.
“We have always been involved in Mandurah with the Mandurah Boardriders and Mandurah Bodyboard Club and sponsor a lot of locals and events,” he said.
