Mandurah's 'good news story' for the future has moved one step closer to reality with council throwing its support behind the establishment of a clinical school.
Described by councillor Fred Riebeling as a step forward, the clinical school would be a partnership between Curtin University and the Peel Health Foundation.
In a report entered at Tuesday night’s council meeting, a current medical skills shortage was identified along with the fact that Western Australia produces the lowest per capita level of general practioners.
“The City of Mandurah is a recognised area of unmet need in the areas of emergency medicine, paediatric medicine, psychatric medicine and general medical,” the report read.
“[Curtin University] is keen to establish a clinical school in the City of Mandurah and is working with the Peel Health Foundation to establish this.”
Cr Jane Field described the medical profession as under resourced and said she supported the project given the fact 2016 is identified as a possible opening date.
Despite the report stating there were no financial implications for the City, Cr Riebeling said hoped the council would keep an eye on any financial implications of the clinic.
Councillors voted unanimously to write to state and Federal ministers supporting the development.
