CANNING MP Don Randall visited Coodanup Community College on Wednesday to discuss the progress of a new Trades Skills Centre to be established at the school.
Mr Randall met with Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry, Bob Baldwin, as well as principal Vicki McKeown and deputy principal Aaron Gregory.
“This Trades Skills Centre will be run by MPA Skills – a group training organisation and registered training organisation that employs more than 300 plumbing and painting apprentices,” Mr Randall said.
“This positions this Trades Skills Centre to provide unique opportunities to its students, as not only will they get certificate two qualifications in either plumbing and gas fitting or painting and decorating, but also offer seamless transitions into apprenticeships.”
Mr Randall said Mr Gregory should be congratulated on the foresight he saw in meeting with different industry representatives to identify what skill sets students would most benefit from.
Mr Gregory identified a genuine demand for plumbers and painters and has worked to engage a key industry organisation in the process through MPA Skills.
Mr Randall said stronger industry engagement and collaboration was a key component of the Coalition’s renewed focus on delivering excellent vocational training in secondary schools.
Other schools in the area that will access the Trades Skills Centre based at Coodanup Community College are Halls Head Community College, John Tonkin College and Mandurah Catholic College.
