PARENTS and kids alike are in for a treat with this adaptation from the 1950s-60s TV series The Bullwinkle Show.
Genius dog Mr Peabody (voiced by Ty Burrell) and his adopted seven-year-old son Sherman (Max Charles) have travelled through the ages in their time machine, The Way Back, stopping off everywhere from the Trojan War to the French Revolution.
But when Sherman takes his nemesis Penny (Ariel Winter) for a spin to Ancient Egypt, the pair accidentally rip a giant hole in the time-space continuum, and it’s up to Peabody to retrieve them and simultaneously reset history.
Every parent can relate to the brainy-but-pernickety Peabody, who can build time machines and win Olympic medals but faces his greatest challenge in raising a son.
The plot is fun and zany, with some memorable twists on history as we know it and jokes applicable to adults as well as kids.
This revived effort from DreamWorks and director Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) offers only the best in animation quality, and is a far cry from its predecessor.
The scratchy, blandly-coloured cartoons from 60 years ago are gone, replaced with vibrant, incredibly detailed animations that are captivating to watch.
Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Antoinette, Abraham Lincoln and Tutankhamun are a few historical figures that make an appearance, interwoven with the modern day humdrum of New York City.
As the trio are shucked from era to era, they find themselves facing wars, palace parties and unwanted weddings in their attempts to get home.
It’s a chronological jumble that is wacky, fast-paced and bound to keep youngsters entertained for the entire 97 minutes.
Mr Peabody and Sherman has plenty of adventure in store, and would suit fans of Horrible Histories with its funny, ingenious takes on history.
