KYNAN Piercy has done it tough recently.
After suffering puzzling symptoms during 2013 the year six Mandurah Baptist College student was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, type B, stage four.
Following the diagnosis late last year, the brave young fighter has regularly spent time at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) where he underwent chemotherapy.
Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system that forms part of the immune system which contains white blood cells that helps protect the body from infection and disease.
So far signs are positive for Kynan with the hope that he will be free of cancer before the year is out.
In support of Kynan two Mandurah Baptist College teachers, the principal and more than 25 students had their heads shaved last Friday to raise funds for PMH.
Principal Rob Gratton admitted he was a little nervous about getting his head shaved but said it was for a good cause.
“PMH is awesome, they do a great job,” he said.
He said it was also about supporting Kynan and his family.
“He has inspired us all,” he said.
Kynan’s teacher Richard Phillips had his head and eye brows shaved for the cause with the crowd of students chanting and screaming in support.
The noise was so loud that some of the younger students covered their ears.
Teacher Zelda Labuschagne volunteered to have her head shaved if $2000 could be raised in two days; the money was raised with Ms Labuschagne joining the other staff members and 26 students to have their hair taken off.
Kynan, who also shaved the little hair he had regrown, said it was great to see the support.
“I’m really happy they all did it,” he said.
The school also held a 'Go Purple Crazy Hair Day' in conjunction with the head shaving event and have been fundraising for more than a month with money raised going to PMH.
To date the school has raised more than $8000 with money still coming in.
Mr Gratton said the support from the school community had been fantastic.
