A GROUP of local mothers are banding together to encourage, equip and develop their skills.
Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) is an international organisation which has found its way to Mandurah.
The initiative gives mothers the chance to meet up regularly, while their children, who are affectionately called moppets, are looked after in their own weekly get together.
“We bring fellowship and friendship together,” organiser Susie Meyerink said.
“We equip them with leadership skills to use in motherhood or in other walks of life and act as a support network.”
The fortnightly meeting invites guest speakers to talk about women’s issues such as post natal depression, and includes a craft activity for the women to partake in.
Last Thursday was MOPS' first meeting, however Teen MOPS, which caters for mothers up to the age of 25, also runs at Mandurah Baptist Church.
Ms Meyerink said having MOPS for mothers over 23 years old enabled the women to continue that social network as they get older.
“It’s a great place to get knowledge; there’s no instruction manual for this,” mother Joanne Thomas said.
“And it gives us a non-bias place to do so,” mother Kylie Lear said.
“Plus it gives us a chance to wind down and gives us mummy’s a break,” Ms Thomas said.
One mother, Nevana Fouche said the group has been a lifesaver for her as she has only just moved to Mandurah from South Africa and has used the group to make friends.
While the mothers are taking a break, their children are right next door doing their own art and craft and playing together, with female carers who have police clearances.
“They’re part of the community and we like to outreach to the community,” Ms Meryerink said.
“We embrace them with the program and help them understand child care.”
