THE Mandurah Avicultural Society is inviting bird lovers and future members to its upcoming bird sale on August 18.
Barragup resident and club member Bryan Littler has been around birds for over 35 years and a member of the Mandurah Avicultural Society for 14 of those years.
Mr Littler said birds make the perfect pets for people of all ages.
He said the first bird he ever had was a budgie with his family in Kalgoorlie when he was young.
“I was fascinated by it,” he said.
“Living in the bush we had hundreds of 28 [parrots] landing in the yard, I was fascinated with birds.” A former cray fisherman, upon retiring, Mr Littler built a bird park in Jurien East which he ran for 14 years.
After leaving the park Mr Littler moved to Barragup where he has a large private collection which he said had grown over the years.
“My backyard started filling up with birds so I bought the block next door,” he said.
“I have 87 aviaries, about 45 different species, its disease it keep growing.”
“I’m going to have to cut it down.”
Mr Littler said in his time he had hand raised close to 200 Red Tailed Black Cockatoos (samuelli).
“It’s wonderful hobby,” he said.
“It keeps an old block like me active.”
Mr Littler said anyone interested in birds should attend the Mandurah Avicultural Society bird sale and meeting.
