THE preferred design for the redevelopment of the Old Mandurah Bridge has a new curved four-lane bridge and a five metre path for use by pedestrians and cyclists.
The design was selected by the The Old Mandurah Bridge Community Reference Group following extensive community consultation and will incorporate elements of the Old Mandurah Bridge, including the fishing platforms.
The CRG’s preferred design option, which is still a draft concept at this stage, will be fully costed and then presented to the Transport Minister at the end of the month on behalf of the Mandurah community.
Nine design options were considered for the Old Mandurah Bridge following a workshop in early April, with the preferred bridge design being recommended in response to a number of factors.
This included future traffic increases, community feedback and discussions with a range of experts with a strong understanding of the elements most important to the Mandurah community.
There will be visual connection to the water through the open design of the shared use path and wide water vista from the estuary and foreshore under the bridge and also scope for local artists to draw on recent and indigenous heritage with public art, seating and interpretive signage.
Feedback from the Mandurah community and the wider region has highlighted the importance of recreation spaces including fishing, cycling, walking and children’s play areas, which has been taken into account in the preferred design.
Key areas of concern, including pedestrian and traffic congestion, safety and crime prevention and bridge jumping will be addressed by the architect and planners once the design moves into the next phase.
The CRG would like the community’s input on the preferred design option.
