WHAT started as a typical night out with friends has left a 17-year-old in Royal Perth Hospital with bleeding on his brain and possible permanent damage to his right ear.
Jimi Brewer-Joyce was walking with three friends on Saturday, July 21 along Safety Bay Road in Warnbro shortly before 11pm when three car loads of males ambushed the group.
The offenders callously armed themselves with baseball bats, golf clubs, pool cues and hockey sticks after covering their faces with balaclavas and bandanas before beating Jimi in a frenzied attack that lasted less than 40 seconds.
In what has been described as a “cowardly” act by detective senior constable Mark Balenzuela, Jimi was bashed unconscious after his friends managed to escape.
One friend sustained minor injuries in the attack.
Jimi’s father Andrew spoke out on Wednesday, warning residents it could happen to them.
“It’s all a bit unbelievable that it happened just around the corner,” he said.
“Really this could happen to anybody.”
CCTV taken from a nearby service station shows up to 10 males exiting their vehicles before running to join in the brutal attack on Jimi.
Mr Joyce said he was disgusted by the behaviour.
“I don’t think much of them at all; who goes driving around with baseball bats and that hitting people for no reason,” he said.
“It’s unacceptable behaviour really.”
Mr Joyce said the whole incident had taken its toll on his family with his wife taking up a bedside vigil for her son who remains in the trauma ward.
Police are yet to interview Jimi such is the extent of his head injuries.
Jimi, a roof plumber for his father’s business, has been described by his father as an active boy who loves mountain biking and rugby.
Det snr cons Balenzuela said Jimi's injuries are extensive and would not discount whether or not a motive was involved.
"He has a fractured skull, fractures to facial bones, bleeding on the brain and pressure behind his right ear causing loss of hearing at this stage," he said.
"We are not discounting anything at the moment whether it was targeted or random; until we talk to Jimi it could just be wrong place wrong time.
"We are seeking assistance from anyone in the area who has seen or heard anything to come forward."
Police are searching for a late model blue Ford Falcon and a dark blue sedan involved in the incident.
The third vehicle, travelling without headlights, was unable to be identified.
While Mr Joyce said the incident has shaken his family, he said Warnbro was still a safe area.
"I have lived in Warnbro for 15 years and it is a close knit community so I wouldn't move," he said.
