Lakelands tragedy

A WOMAN charged with grievous bodily harm following the tragic death of her father on Friday night is likely to have her charge upgraded to murder, according to police.

Veronika-Leigh Meleane Pahuru is alleged to have run Kaiawa ‘Eric’ Pahuru down on Catalina Drive in Lakelands about 6.30pm following a reported domestic dispute.

Police will allege the 19-year-old slammed into her father while driving a Nissan Navara utility.

Ms Pahuru is further alleged to have fled the scene in the immediate aftermath.

Police called for witnesses to the incident on Saturday morning after finding the vehicle of interest in Camillo.

Ms Pahuru was taken into custody that day and formally charged in the afternoon.

Two men have also since been charged in relation to the incident.

A 19-year-old and a 20-year-old are alleged to have damaged Mr Pahuru’s vehicle shortly before the crash. Mr Pahuru reportedly confronted the men before his daughter’s alleged hit and run.

Both of the accused will face Mandurah Magistrates Court tomorrow.

The death of Mr Pahuru has rocked family members from as far away as New Zealand. Facebook has been flooded with messages of love and support for the 41-year-old father. “It’s an absolute tragedy,” one said. “Our thoughts are with the family.”

Ms Pahuru will face Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court again on August 8. Police have indicated she is likely to face a murder charge but are waiting on post mortem results before upgrading the current charge.
