Support the NBN

As most know the National Broadband Network has rolled into Mandurah and areas beginning construction are being announced almost every month.

There have been many negatives in the press but in my opinion it is a fantastic project and is just about the only good thing to come out of this government.

Big infrastructure projects require government money, vision and an element of risk in judging future needs. When the Australia-wide copper network for telephones was commissioned years ago I'm sure many though it was 'overkill' but it has served us well.

The NBN is such a project and will serve us well for many years to come. I work in the IT and communications industry and am looking forward to the benefits. Anyone worried that fibre will be obsolete before the project is finished, think again. The current maximum download speed advertised for the NBN is 1 Gigabit per second. Bell Labs have recently done tests on a single fibre transmitting 100 petabits (1000X1000 Gigabits per sec) now that should be good for a few years. Fibre also doesn't rust and is not susceptible to a lot of problems copper has. Another benefit is competition; we will no longer have the owner of the network also competing as a retailer. They will all be on a level playing field and we will benefit.

I am a Liberal/National supporter but at a Federal level they are threatening to pull the plug on the NBN and replace it with a hopelessly inadequate alternative. If you don't want Mandurah to be stuck with our less than adequate internet and communication service support the NBN and make sure you let your Liberal MP know before the next election.
