Severe weather warning for Mandurah

ANOTHER severe weather warning has been issued for Mandurah and the South West for today and Tuesday evening.

It is expected there will be widespread damaging winds with locally destructive gusts and abnormally high tides.

The warning is for people in parts of WA southwest of a line from Geraldton to Southern Cross to Israelite Bay.

This includes people in, near or between Geraldton,

Dalwallinu, Jurien Bay, Southern Cross, York, Perth, Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown, Albany, Katanning, Narrogin and Esperance.

Weather situation

Monday

A strong cold front will pass over the south of the state, from Jurien Bay Israelite Bay causing damaging win gustsup to 100 kilometres per hour, which could result in damage to homes and properties.

In localised areas squalls may also cause dangerous winds in excess of 125 kilometres per hour that could cause significant damage to homes or property.

Higher than normal tides may result in flooding of low-lying coastal areas.

Dangerous surf conditions are also likely which could cause significant beach erosion.

Winds will ease throughout this area by Monday evening.

This is typical weather for this time of year but winds may cause property damage and make road conditions hazardous.

The winds gusts associated with the strong cold front on Monday will not be as severe as the deep low pressure system experienced during Sunday, or the storm expected on Tuesday evening.

Tuseday evening through Wednesday morning

An intense storm is expected to hit the south of the state, Southwest of a line from Geraldton to Southern Cross to Israelite Bay.

This storm will be of similar strength to the system that affected the southwest on Sunday.

This storm is expected to cause widespread dangerous winds in excess of 125 kilometres per hour that could cause significant damage or destruction to homes or property.

Higher than normal tides may result in flooding of low-lying coastal areas and people near Geographe Bay are specifically warned of the potential for a dangerous storm tide.

Tides are likely to rise significantly above the normal high tide mark.

Dangerous surf conditions are also likely which could cause significant beach erosion.

What to do

For personal safety FESA and the State Emergency Service (SES) advises you to secure loose objects, move vehicles under cover and stay inside away from windows.

If caught outside you should find shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams.

If you own a boat ensure it is securely moored.

Take extra care on the roads as flooding is possible.

If you are driving through heavy rain slow down and turn your lights on or if visibility becomes low pull over and park until it passes.
