MY wife and I are volunteer members of the Friends of Mandurah Performing Arts Centre who were on duty for two shows on Wednesday night which were a virtual sell out.
We understand there was a similar situation on Tuesday and Saturday.
When we arrived an hour before the first show there was no parking available in the vicinity of the theatre and patrons were parking in the City office parking.
In view on the weather conditions this put a dampener - literally and metaphorically on their night out.
By the time the audience arrived for the second house on Wednesday we had a stream of complaints from patrons and at least one of them was extremely abusive to a staff member who had no control over the situation.
The centre continues to put on shows which draw patrons from the Peel region and beyond and therefore is bringing revenue to the city.
We understand that additional parking space was included in the original concept.
The theatre's increasing popularity and the expansion of the number of eating establishments and residences in the area the time has come for the council to address the matter of parking in the area before disgruntled patrons decide to stay at home.
The construction of alternative parking such as going multi-storey may be a long term solution.
As a temporary measure the shuttle buses used for the station to city run during the day could provide a service from one of the daytime parking centres to the theatre before and after shows.
The box office could advise patrons at the time they purchase their tickets about the availability of this service.
