RE: No Change to Netting by Barry Granger of Falcon (Mandurah Mail, March 4).
In Fisheries Research Report No. 104 1996 on Page 12 it states, in relation to Tailor, “However it was exceeded by a number of netters (21%) with one netter taking 150 fish in one set (figure 12a). This reflects the seasonally higher abundance of Tailor using the estuary as a juvenile feeding area over the summer period and progressively recruiting to the net fishery. Blue manna crabs, the bag limit of 24 was exceeded in both attended and unattended nets, with one netter taking 110 crabs in one set (figure14). It must be noted that collecting crabs by netting is presently illegal”.
In 2010 the limit is 10, 20 on a boat with two or more persons.
The report also shows in table eight on page 21, 51.6% Blue Manna crabs, Tailor 42.4% and sea mullet 0.1%.
With that I rest my case.
Mr Granger says in his letter of course; “Those people who don't go net fishing don't know what fun they are missing out on”.
I wish someone would tell him to stop dreaming.
If Recfishwest supports people like Mr Granger and keeps supporting recreational gill netting in the Peel Harvey estuary then both Recfishwest and the Peel Region are going to be the losers.
A letter has been sent to Mr Prokop and his committee at Recfishwest.
I am seeking support to make the Peel Harvey estuary free from recreational gill netting.
There has been consultation with the stakeholders as far back as 1984.
