IT was with alarm that I learnt for the first time in this week of the proposed imposition of a ban on the use of power winches on recreational boats for the purpose of lifting rock lobster pots.
This is supposedly to prevent recreational fishers lifting commercial pots and is an insult to the recreational fishers.
The effect of the ban will fall most unfairly on the elderly and women and anyone who's strength or health prevents them from pulling a lobster pot manually.
I have been told by Fisheries that it is now intended to delay the ban until next year to give more notice but if it is ever imposed it is going to mean many people will no longer be able to participate in this popular Mandurah activity.
