Have your say on the name

Have your say on the name

A COMPETITION to rename the city centre hasn’t been formally announced yet but already it is attracting plenty of interest.

And judging by some of the Letters to the Editor in today’s Mail some of the suggestions are probably not the kind of interest the competition organisers are looking for.

The plan to rebadge the central business district is to give it a new identity and hopefully lure more people to the iconic part of the coastal city.

A local committee, represented by the Mandurah City Council, The Peel Development Commission and the Peel Chamber of Commerce, will soon host the renaming competition that will feature some major prizes.

The plan is to announce the winner at the annual Christmas Pageant held in the area in mid-December.

The renaming is only part of the picture that will also focus on theme nights, events, a marketing campaign and possibly night markets.

The people behind the project are in a ‘damned if you do and damned if you don’t’ scenario because some people and retailers are already angry at some of the area’s redevelopment while others won’t want to revert back to what it was.

Will it work?

At this stage no one really knows but there is certainly a lot of support for and against.

So why not have your say as well.

It is probably the only time the community can have a say in the naming of a public area.

ONE of the Mail’s lead stories this week centres on graffiti and people being caught in the act on closed circuit television systems.

There is anecdotal evidence that a lot of people carry out senseless acts of vandalism so they can brag about it to their mates.

So in a lot of cases people know who is responsible for these attacks.

If you know anyone involved in such a stupid act, or in fact recognise the alleged offenders on the front page of today’s Mail, don’t just sit back and ignore it – tell the authorities.

It’s our community and we should all be proud of it.

I believe after the stupid re-development of the foreshore and screwing up the flow of traffic, the best thing that can be done to Mandurah is to change the town centre's name. That way it may bring new life to the centre as it is somewhat dated and slowly loosing business because of the hassle to reach any of the stores and cafes. My friend and I have a few ideas both traditional and relevant to our town’s culture and history.
