Nielsen to touch base with New York Yankees

04 Jul, 2008 10:00 PM

Australian coach Tim Nielsen will tour the New York Yankees' facilities at the conclusion of the one-day series against the West Indies.

Nielsen will arrive in New York ahead of Major League Baseball's annual All-Star Game, which will be played at Yankee Stadium, and inspect the team's practice facilities thereafter. The Australian coach will be among the last to tour the stadium, known as "The House That Ruth Built", in its current form, with the Yankees set to relocate next season.

Nielsen's visit to the Bronx has been facilitated by Australia's fielding coach Mike Young.

Young, an American, has previously managed minor league teams in the US, and has contacts within the Yankees and Mets organisations.

"Baseball to me is one of the closest family members to cricket," Nielsen said. "It's a similar sort of skill set as far as hitting and catching and fielding the ball goes. I suppose my idea is to see how they deal with high profile players, how they deal with the preparation of players when they play so often. We're now going to a more busy workoad and schedule after the break after the tour. So just how they manage that sort of thing, and a bit of an idea across the board of how they manage and prepare and play the game of baseball.

"From my point of view and from this team's point of view, we have six of the ten most marketable players in Australia. So we have some high profiles, and making sure they're working well and looked after, but also aware of where their future is and where their cricket is going is one of our major challenges. They've got so many players who earn so much money and have such great profiles, rather than us trying to reinvent the wheel, if we can get a few hints along the way it hopefully make it a lot easier for us."

Nielsen envisaged that his visit to New York would provide most benefit to the Centre of Excellence, which is looking for new, innovative training methods.

"If I can go and look at these things first hand and bring back some information on how it works ... it's just so much easier doing that face to face than over the email," he said. "I would just love to see their training facilities,. As you probably know, we have some money put aside for the Centre of Excellence. So we might take that to a new level ... if there are things that are above Australia.
