Pedestrian safety fear as glass falls from sky - again

09 May, 2008 05:40 PM
A "bucket load" of shattered glass was collected from a shade canopy yesterday after another glass panel fell from a Brisbane city skyscraper. The pane was at least the second to fall from Waterfront Place, a prominent riverside tower in the CBD covered with 4000 blue glass panels. The last incident occurred in November, when three windows shattered and rained glass shards on the street below. In October of last year a similar incident occurred at 444 Queen Street in the CBD.A spokesperson for Industrial Relations Minister John Mickel said a workplace health and safety investigation found that yesterday's window shattered in its frame and fell from the 19th floor."Half the window was still in the frame and a bucketload of shattered glass was gathered from the canopy around the outside of the building," the spokesperson said.No one was hurt and no property was damaged.Brisbane City Council and the building's owner, Stockland, were dealing with the issue, he said.Central ward councillor David Hinchliffe said the building had a history of problems and the council needed to act quickly."There are hundreds of panes of glass in that building, so whatever needs to be done should be done immediately for the safety of everyone in the area," Cr Hinchliffe said."At various times we've had reports saying it is OK but clearly it's not OK."This is one of Brisbane's premier buildings and as the local councillor my major concern is the safety of all of those pedestrians on the footpath below," he said.
