Record day for Mandurah triathlon

06 Jan, 2010 02:22 PM
MANDURAH Triathlon Club hosted the Bikeman Triathlon at Madora Bay last Sunday.

This was the first time since the early origins of the club a triathlon event had been held at Madora Bay.

The change proved to successful with a new club record of 55 competitors entering the short course event comprising of a 300m swim, 15km bike ride and 3km run - of those 54 successfully completing the race.

The historic day also featured another club record with 20 of the competitors competing in their first triathlon.

The triathlon started on the new course in sunny and warm conditions with a calm flat swim, fast and flat bike course and a slight breeze for the run.

Troy Main blitzed the swim leg of the race and was first out of the water with a handy 50-second lead over tough rival Leigh Willison, who in turn was followed closely by talented 14-year-old Mikala Falconer a further five seconds behind.

In doing so Main was the first competitor to experience what turned out to be a relatively tough 65m run up the beach to the transition area to start the bike leg of the race.

Main also went on to record the fastest bike and run times to win the race in the very good time of 40mins 15secs, ahead of Willison (42mins 28secs) and Paul Gardner (43mins 25secs).

James Muir seemed to enjoy the Madora Bay course and had a great race to finish fourth (44mins 24secs) to record his best placing for the season so far.

The race also featured several competitors who competed in Ironman WA in Busselton last month.

Many of these were having their first outing following a well needed break from training and generally seemed to find the Madora Bay short course race tough going after completing the Ironman WA event comprised of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km run.

The exception to this group was Darryl Harris who finished the triathlon in fifth place to continue the great form he has displayed this season.

Falconer was the first female to complete the race, finishing 12th overall in the very good time of 47mins 39secs followed by Nicole Gunthorpe in 48mins 59secs (17th overall) and Carina Costello in 50mins 25secs (20th overall).

Steve Ware, in just his second Mandurah club race, bounced back from 42nd position in the swim leg to complete the race finishing in 11th position overall (46mins 47secs) on the back of a good ride and achieving the third fastest run of the day.

Ware’s performance demonstrated that competitors don’t have to be strong in all three disciplines of triathlon and that competitors are able to capitalise on their strongest discipline/s to achieve great results.

The next Madora Bay race will be held on January 17.

This race is a short course event and will provide a great training opportunity for anyone competing in the upcoming Mandurah Corporate Triathlon to be held on February 21.
