Foursome to put their bodies to the test

22 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
FOUR Mandurah Triathlon Club members will put their bodies through the ultimate test in the gruelling World Long Distance Titles in Perth this Sunday.

The course is a 3km swim, 80km cycle and 20km run and Mandurah entrants David Whiteley, Darryl Harris, Luke Goard and Andrew Luraschi have been covering some serious distances during their six-day training regimes in the lead up to the big event.

The foursome has been training well through the challenging winter conditions to reach the level of fitness required for the testing course that starts at Langley Park - riding between 200 and 300km, running 20-40km and swimming10-25km each week.

To be eligible for the World Titles the foursome had to perform well at the six qualifiers which were held over the past few months.

As host of this year’s World Titles, Australia could field a maximum of 25 competitors in each age category.

Luraschi will compete in the 25-29 age division, Goard qualified for the 30-34, Harris will race in the 45-49 category and Whiteley is one of 14 Australians in the 55-59 division.

Overall the World Titles will have more than 1000 competitors from across the globe.

Whiteley said it was hard to judge how well the four Mandurah entrants would perform.

“Because this is only the start of the season for us while the Europeans are coming to the end of theirs,” he said.

During the off season Harris took up road racing with the Peel District Cylcling Club to help him gain an extra edge and it is showing.

He is in the best form of his life and after an eye catching Busselton Ironman performance will be hoping to take that form into the World Titles.

Harris and Whiteley started competing in triathlons about the same time 10 years ago.

Whiteley said he enjoyed the three different disciplines and that was what kept him motivated.

“It works the whole body… competing is just the by-product of all the training,” he said.
