THE 2010 Steve Batty Enduro triathlon was held at Doddis Beach Halls Head last Sunday with 49 enthusiastic competitors entering the race.
The Mandurah Triathlon Club hosts the event each year in memory of the former club member and an award is given to the first junior athlete to cross the line.
The Enduro format of triathlon requires competitors to undertake a swim, ride and run of half the normal short course race distance of 300m (swim), 15km (cycle) and 3km (run), before repeating the process to complete the race.
This form of triathlon emphasises the importance of being able to transition from one discipline to another as quickly as possible.
In an outstanding performance 14-year-old Justin Amos demonstrated his prowess in the Enduro format by completing the course in 52mins 11secs to become the first junior to cross the finish line and place a remarkable 19th overall to be awarded the Steve Batty Enduro junior trophy.
In another notable performance, nine-year-old Chaice Kelly-Wilson demonstrated his toughness at such a young age to complete the course as junior runner-up in 1hr 18mins.
The race started at the beach for the first 150m swim around the Doddis Beach pontoon and back to shore.
The ocean was mildly choppy and the action in the water was fast and furious with the 49 competitors jostling each other for best position in an attempt to be first around the pontoon to start the initial bike leg of the race along Halls Head Parade into a freshening easterly breeze.
Mandurah women were well represented in the race with a total of 14 competitors. Carina Costello was the first female across the line in 51mins 11secs (17th overall), followed by the rapidly improving Jenny Pedrana in 53mins 11secs (23rd overall) and newcomer Bronnie Kay in 56mins 6secs (30th overall) with Lauren Backshall (in her first race of the season) completing the course in 56mins 36sec (32nd overall).
The Enduro format of triathlon includes the rarely encountered transition between run to swim legs in the middle part of the race.
The race also featured the return of 18-year-old Troy Main to Mandurah club competition after an absence due to other racing and training commitments.
Main dominated the race and completed the course in 42mins 12secs to go one better than his hard-fought second place in the same race last year.
Andrew Luraschi continued his great 2010 form to finish in second place overall in 45mins 7secs with a hard working Darryl Harris crossing the line in third place following a hard fought battle just four seconds behind.
