Rookie boxer wins first fight

06 May, 2009 12:01 PM
AFTER just six months of training, rookie boxer Joe Symes won his first two bouts against more experienced fighters last weekend.

The 29-year-old former rugby player from Mandurah started training with Kirsty Matthews just for fitness.

Matthews, the reigning 57kg female state champion, said she knew Symes was ready to compete because he showed natural talent and ability.

After he sparred with experienced boxers at The Boxing Shed, Matthews said she knew he was ready.

“He went really well against them and held his own,” she said.

Last Saturday Symes won both his two novice men 81-91kg division fights with a score of 12-9 and 3-0 at the Perth Embassy Ballroom.

Symes will again enter the ring to compete against state-level boxers in three weeks.

Matthews was impressed with this two opening performances and predicted big things for her apprentice.

“He showed character,” she said.

“He trains hard and is committed, I couldn’t really ask for a better boxer.”
