Peel trio among the nation's best

01 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
TWO women and three men from Peel qualified for the Western Tigers touch rugby state 18s team that competed in the National Youth Championships held in New South Wales last month.

Emma Avery and Rubina Trego qualified for the girls’ team while Blane Edwards, Ricky Tasila and Brody Toon-Poynton were named in the boys’ side.

Edwards was named captain and Tasila was named as his deputy.

State duties are nothing new for the five talented local players with Toon-Poynton and Edwards having previously played for WA in the 15s school boys competition.

Tasila represented WA in the 18s championship last year, Avery played for Victoria last year and Trego represented WA in 15s school girls championship.

A total of eight Peel players made the cut but Nekesha Fish, Ricky Hayes and Andrew Johnson had to withdraw due to injury or other commitments.

Peel’s Marcus Weston was elected as an assistant coach.

In his first position at state level, Weston had previously coached the Peel 18s men’s side for two years and he currently oversees the Peel women’s open team.

This year’s 18s championship was held at Port MacQuarie from September 16-19 and in the lead up to the competition the squad trained together every Sunday morning for four months.

On top of that the squads had two trial weekends, one high performance weekend and a final training session the weekend before they flew over to NSW.

At the championships the girls won five games and lost five to finish 11th out of 19 teams while the boys placed 16th from 17 teams.

Queensland won the women’s championship and the men’s was won by New South Wales.

Three Peel players - Edwards, Toon-Poynton and Avery – were selected for an alliance merit team of the best players from the WA, Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria, ACT and Tasmania.

Edwards was also named as the players’ player in the WA squad.

Registration for the upcoming summer social competition is at Bortolo Reserve from 6.30pm on Tuesday, October 6.

This season all games will be played at Bortolo Reserve and conditions of entry and team nomination forms are now available.
