Pacers get a flying start

Although busy with a trucking business at Greenbushes, Jones was all smiles after the success of the eight-year-old son of Village Jasper.

The journey home to the mining community was not quiet as arduous or long as the trip to Perth with a win under the belt.

Dr Dre continued his sparkling form for new trainer Kevin Strahan of Pinjarra, running a solid second placing to the winner of the DBC Tender Ridge Stakes, classy conveyance Sneakyn Down Under, trained by Darren Duffy and driven by Chris Lewis.

Waroona water baby Compressor was able to make waves in The West Australian Trotters Stakes, driven by Morgan Woodley for his stepfather Nigel Johns.

Just two seconds outside the track record of Nackokee, Compressor has not only delighted his connections but is fast gathering a support group to rival that of Australian swimming champ Grant Hackett.

Known for his antics around the water at Nigel and Deb Woodley’s property at Waroona, the much loved gelding,a six year old son of Sundon, would have stretched out in whatever water he could find last Saturday as reward for his seven wins from sixteen starts since coming to the west from the eastern seaboard.

Astrolabe Storm, trained by Glen Pellew and driven by son David, appeared to be out of a place chance as the field of twelve pacers turned for home in The City Of Perth Stakes but ever the optimist David knew best and on a wing and a prayer was able to sweep along side his opposition before putting them to the sword and recording a great win.

It was the second from four starts this season for owners Joanne Pellew and Alison Coles.

Just Jasper continued to reach for the stars when driven by Aldo Cortapassi for trainer Grant Sullivan, the winner of the 2008 James Brennan Memorial, adding that success to his already impressive two wins and three seconds from his past five starts.

Adam Mellsop, always on the lookout for freelance drives as a concession driver, made every post a winner in the Ross North Homes Bob Jones Young Drivers Stakes.

He saluted with the seven-year-old son of Live Or Die for Hazelmere trainer, Mark Reed.

Not frightened to do the miles, the young man who assists at the Waroona stables of his parents Bob and Val is a seasoned traveler and is usually seen at most country venues as he pursues a career in the cart.

With the pony trots back in full swing after a let up, the excitement generated by a piebald gelding no larger than a well grown doberman in the Gloucester Park Be Active WATA Pony Trot event at the city track last Friday had to be seen to be believed.

Driven by Jordan Roberts, Tiny Taz decided about 200 metres from home that he had spent every penny he was going to in the race and stopped, convinced the race was all over.

With the opposition bearing down on him and to the roar of the enthusiastic crowd, Jordan gave the tiny three-year-old a couple of reminders with the reins and with the crowd noise urging them on was able to just fall over the line.

Even hardened pacing personnel were urging horse and driver to the line and a better finish could not have been scripted.

The Queens Birthday long weekend meeting at Pinjarra Paceway showed the benefit of the 1000 metre track to its best advantage.

Not just full fields of city-type pacers took to the track but also massive crowd numbers filtered on course and managed to return to the club on-course turnover figures of in excess of $80,000.

The meeting featured the WASBA & Chaff City 2008 Golden Girls Mile with some of the state’s leading ladies playing a part in the 1670 metre $20,000 event.

Although not advertised as Ladies Day, the quality of mares and fillies who nominated for the race made the event sure to be one that will feature at Pinjarra Paceway in years to come.

The owner of Amongst Royalty, Ross Torre, and trainer Sam Torre as well as a contingent of family members were trackside to witness the step-perfect drive of Garry Hall Jnr as he guided the Parsons Den five-year-old to a breakaway success.

They were certainly all smiles after her success and although pressure is mounting for the pretty bay to head to the Ladyship Mile connections are reticent to fly her east with some quality mares’ races here in the west in the new year.

Pacers to follow from the meeting were plentiful: names such as the impressive Global Glider, Mach Ruler, Can Return Fire, Gransagenic (racing in Dockers colours and driven by Colin Brown for Owen Gilbride), Shinydes and Ten To Zero with Nuts About Soky also a city winner in the near future.

Club officials will not have long to bask in the glory of such a tremendous day as pacing at the place of pace continues this Monday.
