SIX competitors from Mandurah’s Go-Ju Kai Karate travelled to South Africa last month to compete in the Fifth Go-Ju Kai Karate World Championships.
Coming home with four medals, owner of the Mandurah Club Brigit Wall said she couldn’t be more proud.
“All the students not only represented Australia but also the club with pride,” Ms Wall said.
“A high standard was demonstrated from all students throughout the whole competition,” she said.
Cassidy Pethick placed third in kata, Caris Stewart placed fourth in kata and third in kumite, Brigit Wall placed third in bunkai, Megan Wall placed third in kumite and Joshua Pethick and Adam Dunning placed in the top 10 for kata.
In the 26 countries that competed in the competition, Australia placed sixth and there were around 1000 competitors in this year’s event.
“The competition was like walking into the Olympics, it was so exciting,” Caris Stewart said.
Joshua Pethick said the part he enjoyed most of the event was the opening ceremony.
“We got to walk out in front of every single person in the stadium, it felt awesome,” he said.
The next world championships will be held in 2013 in India.
