Falcons flying high at the start of the season

27 Apr, 2005 02:32 PM
THE South Mandurah train is gathering momentum in the Peel Football League.

After being the easy beats in the competition for the last few years, they go into round four this weekend undefeated.

This has not only surprised many followers around the region but also some at the club.

The latest win was a nail-biter again cross-city rivals Mandurah last weekend, the final margin being two points.

The lead changed hands many times in the game of the round.

It's been a few years since both Mandurah teams have been locked in such a close duel and while Souths took the premiership points, it was great for football in the city.

The Falcons led the Mustangs 3.2 to 2.7 at quarter time but the Mustangs bounced back to lead 6.11 to 6.4 at the major break.

An intense third quarter saw the Falcons kick 4.5 to the Mustangs' 2.1 in the third quarter, giving them back the lead.

The Mustangs went on the attack in the last quarter believing they could win the game.

Despite kicking 3.3 to the Falcons' 2.2 it wasn't enough for them to take the win, giving South Mandurah early season bragging rights.

An entertaining aspect of the game was that 16 different players scored goals in this game, seeing plenty of forward movement by both teams.

While this was the closest and most exciting game of the round, the one-sided match between Centrals and Kwinana was anything but the same.

Centrals kicked a massive 44.25 (289) to Kwinana's 1.5 (11).

The result was decided very early on in the first quarter with Centrals piling on a swag of goals.

They led 10.5 to 1.2 at quarter time.

Kwinana had no answers at either end of the ground.

They only managed one point in each of the next three quarters while conceding too many goals.

After three rounds both Centrals and South Mandurah are the only two undefeated teams in the competition.

Centrals is on top with a massive percentage of 461%, thanks mainly to last weekend's big win, while South Mandurah is still impressive with its 147%.

Rockingham and Waroona are the next best teams with two wins each, both claiming their second wins in round three.

Rockingham 16.3 (99) defeated Pinjarra 11.8 (74).

This was a fairly close game in the first half with Pinjarra leading 3.2 to 2.0 at quarter time.

In fact the Tigers continued to lead at the major break – 4.6 to 3.1, but lost the game in the third quarter.

The Rams powered away, adding 9.2 to their score while a stunned Pinjarra could only manage 3.2.

Despite a relatively even final quarter the damage was already down, forcing Pinjarra to look to another game for their first win of the season.

Waroona's second win was at the hands of Harvey, kicking 13.9 (87) to 10.2 (62).

Waroona led at every break to take the relatively comfortable win.

The weekend's results now see the top four separated from the bottom four.

Harvey and Mandurah are in fifth and sixth respectively with just the one win each.

The bottom of the ladder is occupied by Pinjarra and Kwinana, both winless at this stage.

While the Mandurah and Pinjarra haven't enjoyed the best of starts in the league, they have faired better in the reserves.

Mandurah is on top of the ladder undefeated after three games.

Pinjarra's superior percentage puts them in second, ahead of Rockingham and Centrals all with two wins each.

Pinjarra and South Mandurah are the teams to watch in the colts, both undefeated.

But this will change this weekend when they play each other at Pinjarra.

Mandurah and Rockingham take up third and fourth respectively with two wins each and these two sides will also be separated when they clash in round four in Rockingham.
