Couanis wins for third consecutive year

MATT Couanis displayed grit and determination to win the Steve Batty Enduro Junior Award for the third year in a row at Doddis Beach last weekend.

The Mandurah Triathlon Club holds the triathlon each year in memory of former club member Steve Batty.

This year, a field of 33 men, women, boys and girls took to the sea on Sunday morning.

The 15-year-old Couanis was the first competitor to emerge from the water after the initial swim section, shedding his wetsuit for the 6.5km bike leg and 1.5km run.

After the first run he headed back to the water to repeat the three sections of this double triathlon.

In a powerful overall performance, Couanis eventually finished fifth in the open division behind the club's senior champions.

Other junior males to perform very well were Tyson Brandis and Thomas Atanasovski.

As expected, the triathlon was a fiercely contested affair in the men's division.

The front group of Dave Kennedy, Darryl Harris and Darren Matthews fought hard, the positions changing several times before Kennedy eventually won the race in a time of 40 minutes, 40 seconds.

Geoff Amos finished fourth.

The women's division was won by perennial champion Michelle Clinton in a time of 45:52.

Sixteen-year-old Nadia Atanasovski won the Steve Batty Enduro Junior Award in the girls division with another great performance, while Kellie Berglund followed right on her heels to take second place.

The next event for the Mandurah Triathlon Club is a standard triathlon on February 5.
