Britton is the best

25 Mar, 2009 03:25 PM
FOR the 10th year in a row Linda Britton of Nambeelup has been crowned Western Australia’s leading greyhound trainer of the year.

The announcement was made at a gala function in Perth earlier in the month.

Britton won the award after training 336 winners on the track in 2008.

Included in her big number of wins was the prestigious trainers’ premiership at both Cannington and Mandurah, which she won for the third consecutive year.

Contributing to her successful year was Eye Murrna, who was also a contender for Greyhound of the Year, Bear Cat and Elegance who performed consistently in Mandurah last year.

Britton credited her successful year to consistency and having the right staff to support her.

“They keep me motivated and we’re lucky to have good owners,” she said.

Training greyhounds is in Britton’s blood.

Originally from Victoria, Britton’s father Allan was a very successful greyhound trainer and her two brothers Robert and Jeff are both leading trainers in her home state.

Robert currently holds the Victorian Trainer of the Year title.

She moved to WA 25 years ago and had no intention of training dogs but after she started with a couple her empire grew from there and gradually got bigger and bigger.

Currently she has 40 working greyhounds.

Training at her Nambeelup property for the past 20 years Britton said it was the winners that kept her going.

Along with winning the WA Trainer of the Year award she notes her 2007 national trainer of the year title as one of the highlights in recent years.

Already Britton has had a bright start to 2009, most recently she trained Western Land to victory in last Saturday night’s the Group 1 $80,000 Sky Channel Galaxy final at Cannington.

It is the second richest staying race in Australia.

They key to a good greyhound according to Britton is good attitude with a will to chase.

“A good temperament is important and usually they are well bred.”

Next up for Britton is the two-year-old oaks and derby at Cannington and greyhounds to keep an eye out from her kennels are Russel Up, Daisy Reltub and Tonka.
