MANDURAH drag racer Karl Firmin has been impressed with the speed of his new Holden Commodore Super Sedan but says there is still more to go as he plans to move up the ranks.
And he is looking to impress when he contests the Nitro Funny Car Fury round at the Perth Motorplex in Kwinana Beach this Saturday night.
Firmin's new car is just four events old and covers the quarter mile drag strip at the Motorplex in just 9.2 seconds.
“It's a big step to make from a street car but it is a very good car out on the track,” Firmin said.
“It all happens so much quicker now, you've covered half the track before you know it.”
The V8 engine in the car produces about 620 horsepower according to Firmin, about that of a V8 Supercar.
But even that power is not enough to satisfy Firmin just yet.
“At the end of the season we will pull the engine apart and try and find some more
horsepower; we want to run into the eight second zone,” he said.
Running quicker times is one goal but so is being able to consistently win races.
Firmin has already taken one runner up in the new car and wants to bring some more trophies home next season, where he hopes to challenge for the championship.
“We're not out there just to make up the numbers; they say winning breeds winning and I think once you have the taste you want to keep going,” he said.
“There's luck involved in every event of course, but by surrounding yourself with good people you increase your chances.”
Firmin said racing in Super Sedan was a lot more of a challenge than Super Street, where he used to compete.
“It's still a great group of people, you go out to be competitive of course but you try not to make enemies along the way,” he said.
Early qualifying starts from 11am Saturday with the main program from 6pm.
