Bell rings in national medal

19 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
DUDLEY Park Bowling Club’s talented junior lawn bowler, 15-year-old Robert Bell, has continued the successful run of the club’s junior bowls program by securing his first national bronze medal with teammate Cody Packer, competing in the boys pairs at Halekulani in New South Wales.

The sectional play saw the pair comfortably defeat Queensland pair Jay Cross and Brad Piper 23-15 followed by another solid win over Tasmania duo Brodie Baker and Andrew Whitemore 18-12.

The final match against Victorian wiz and Australian representative Dylan Fisher and experienced partner Aaron Wilson proved to be a stumbling block in the WA team’s quest for gold, with the Vics taking the match 20-10.

Following the qualifying rounds the WA duo was pitted against talented the NSW pair of Sam Prior and Kyle Johannes in the battle for the bronze.

Bell and Packer established their superiority early in the match to lead 15 shots to six after 10 ends, only to have their opponents dig deep and draw level at 15 shots each.

The WA pair responded valiantly under pressure to record a convincing win 23-16 and secure the pairs national bronze medal for WA.
