Racing returns to Pinjarra

15 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
HORSE racing will return to Pinjarra Park on Sunday, October 18.

The meet will be the first of the 2009/10 season.

Pinjarra Race Club general manager Colin Bellchambers said the track was in superb condition ready for the new racing season.

“Stewards and jockeys checked the track two weeks ago and are delighted with the condition of the track,” Bellchambers said.

“There is no need to hold any trials because we have already proved that it is ready.”

Last season’s opening meet attracted a crowd of more than 3500 people who spent nearly $300,000 while another $800,000 was bet off course.

Bellchambers hopes to exceed these figures on Sunday.

On top of the $3.5million reconstruction of the track which was completed before the start of last season, Pinjarra Park has undergone further development during the off season to its facilities.

New pathways have been laid and a new restaurant in an elevated position will be available to members and the public.

“We’ve done several developments in the off season to make it more comfortable for patrons,” Bellchambers said.

The 2009/10 season will include 22 race meetings and will run until May next year.

Following the first meeting on Sunday another meeting will be held on Thursday, October 29.

Other meetings this year will be held on November 5, November 18, November 22, December 3, December 13 and December 28.

The new year will open with a meeting on January 2.

Two of the biggest meetings will be the Pinjarra Classic Day on February 21 and the XXXX Gold Pinjarra Cup on February 28.

The season will conclude on May 6.

Bellchambers said people could expect continued high quality racing this upcoming season on “arguably Western Australia’s best track”.
