Media Race Day closes Pinjarra race season

13 May, 2009 03:25 PM
PINJARRA Race Club’s 2008/09 season came to a close with the $3 Media Race Day last Wednesday.

Jointly sponsored by the Mandurah Mail and 97.3 Coast FM, the final meet of the season provided little surprises with most of the betting favourites winning the eight races.

In the opening race, a 1200m two-year-old maiden plate, the three pre-race favourites each filled the top three positions.

Brown/black gelding Our Ol’ Fella, backed as the equal second favourite at $4.60 along with New Zealand galloper Pinzera, placed first ahead of the pre-race favourite Redhage ($4).

Pinzera, trained by Darren McAuliffe, finished third.

Locals Keith Jeffreys and Peter Hall saluted in race two after Nomunnofun crossed the finish line first in race two, a $10,000 1200m maiden plate.

Trainer Jeffreys of Pinjarra, who is also on the Pinjarra Race Club committee, and South Yunderup jockey combined to see the three-year-old filly at $7 odds win ahead of fellow $7 favourite Faslight and the pre-race favourite Sheatar Seacret ($3.70).

The second favourite Step and Go at $3.80 finished fifth.

Considered an each way chance going into race three, a 1200m maiden plate, three-year-old filly Spekkey earned equal favouritism at $4.40 after finishing runner up over the same distance by a neck at Bunbury a week earlier.

Trained by Greg Carige of Bunbury, the galloper with Irish blood (from Ihtiram) did not disappoint with jockey Daniel Staeck guiding her victory from Poppy Jazz ($6) and outsider Executive Power ($16).

Equal favourite Touch and Tell placed seventh.

Another Bunbury trainer in Michael Lane produced a winner in the following race, a 1200m handicap for three-year-olds.

His grey gelding Coppaclip Inn went into the race as second favourite at $4.80 and crossed the line ahead of third backed galloper Mega Steel and the favourite Classy Time at $2.70.

Classy Time’s third place was jockey Alan Kennedy’s second top three finish in as many races.

He also rode Poppy Jazz to second in race three.

In race five, a $13,000 2000m handicap, three-year-old False Bravado proved his bravado was anything but false to win ahead of Bet Ahead and General Tomas.

The Hec McLaren-trained gelding went into the race as third favourite at $9.

The short-priced favourite New Abode at $2 finished well behind the pack in eighth.

Kennedy produced another top ride in race six, a $13,000 1400m handicap, onboard outsider Our Chief at $21 odds to place second behind second favourite Can Time ($6.50) ridden by Chloe Chatfield.

The rising female jockey star had a big chance to make it two wins on a row on board the pre-race favourite Akheson ($4.60) in race seven, a 16oom handicap, but the six-year-old gelding finished a disappointing sixth.

Star Khenaction ($10 odds) crossed the line first ahead of Fim Spirit ($13) and Little Assassin ($7).

In the final race of the meet, a 1200m handicap, Chatfield placed second onboard Indigo Torque ($15) behind the winner Nikadonna ($5.50).
