Rebels escape with draws

02 Jul, 2009 09:19 AM
BOTH senior teams were lucky last weekend.

The women drew two-all with Old Hale and the men had a three-all draw with Old Guildford.

The Peel Rebels women’s team did well with an under strength team against a top four side. With a sound structure they got off to a good start and were leading 2-0 for most of the first half. After being 2-1 down, the Hale team came out strongly and controlled most of the second half.

However, with strong defensive play from Abby Tillet and Emma Ross and good midfield contributions from Isobel Bevis and Megan Wiggers, they managed to hold on for a draw.

The men also had a tough time against the undefeated top side Old Guildford. When they lost their key defensive playmaker in Leigh Myers half way through the first half, the score was 2-0 in their favour.

From then on, without that control, the side lost its momentum and the game became a tight scramble for the rest of the game.

However with the strong goalie work of Jarrod Jones and the defensive work of Sean Griffiths and new father Scott Forsyth the Rebels hung on for a draw. It was also good to see the younger brigade in Dylan Towie, Gavin Bathgate, Chad Giles and Regan Vermeulen make strong contributions for the side.

The under 17s ventured to Hale for their away games. Although not raining the ground was very heavy and this made it difficult to execute a fast moving game.

The girls were defeated by YM Coastals 2-0 and although they stuck to their tasks well, YM gradually wore the Rebels girls down.

All players tried hard in the conditions with Tori Johnson and the goalie Sarah Ilsley being the best on the night.

The boys had more successful night defeating North Coast Raiders 3-0.

All players focussed on their team responsibilities and were well rewarded with an easy win. Kieran Abbot is starting to get the hang of midfield play and with Chad Giles and Regan Vermeulen continuing their solid form; the team can look forward to a strong second half to the season.
