Perth Glory to play in town

11 Jun, 2009 08:58 AM
FORMER English Premier League player Robbie Fowler is set to play at Hyundai Stadium in Mandurah.

The ex Liverpool star, who signed a two-year deal with A-League newcomers North Queensland Fury, is set to take to the Halls Head pitch when his new club plays a pre-season match against Perth Glory on Saturday, July 18.

The game will be the third time Mandurah will play host Glory, following from last year’s pre-season match against Newcastle and a warm-up game against Singapore in 2003.

Mandurah City Football Club operations manager Mark Dixon expected the Glory side and 33-year-old Fowler to draw a crowd about 3000.

“Robbie Fowler is hugely well-known and a class player,” Dixon said.

The former England international is arguably the biggest coup in A-League history.

Fowler scored 183 goals in 265 appearances with Liverpool and also had stints with Leeds, Manchester City, Cardiff and Blackburn.

He scored seven goals in 27 appearances for England.

“This is a great opportunity to capitalise his stardom,” Dixon said.

“With the A-league starting to get players like Robbie Fowler it just goes to show that the league is developing and is credible in its own right.”

Glory will train from 9-10am and again at 2-3pm the day before the match, so there will also be plenty of opportunity for local fans to catch glimpses of this season’s team.

The Mandurah game is one of two pre-season games the Glory will play in Western Australia before the A-league season starts.

Glory will play the other WA match in Bunbury.

Dixon said for Glory to choose Hyundai Stadium for the second consecutive year as the venue for the game was a credit to the Mandurah City Soccer Club.

“For them to choose us again shows that they recognise we had run it properly last year,” Dixon said.

Tickets for the Glory game are $10 for children under 12 and concessions and $20 for adults.

Kick off is at 3pm.
